All quiet On the [Northern Cyprus Property] Home Front
How much of the eerie quietness in the [Northern Cyprus] property market is
down to the heat, and how much is down to good old propaganda [about Northern
Cyprus property market]?
A slow summer [in Northern Cyprus property market] is to be expected: the
sweltering heat alone is enough to put potential buyers [of northern Cyprus
properties such as apartments in central Kyrenia] off the thought of traipsing
round building sites all day. But how much of the eerie quietness in the
[Northern Cyprus] property market is down to the heat, and how much is down to
good old propaganda [about Northern Cyprus property market]?
[Northern Cyprus] Estate agents often report that the summer months are quiet,
and that many more properties [such as apartments in central Kyrenia] are sold
in the autumn when people come specifically to buy [Northern Cyprus properties
such as apartments in Kyrenia] and not for a holiday. However, many think there
may be more to the stillness than meets the eye. After the UK’s Tonight with
Trevor McDonald programme featured a ‘special report’ on the TRNC [Northern
Cyprus property] last month, many agents [of Northern Cyprus] have reported an
unexpected slump in [property] sales. The programme, which showed a Greek
Cypriot upset by the development of land [in Northern Cyprus] which she claims
was originally hers, was shown in a prime time slot and has obviously had an
impact on viewers [of potential buyers of Northern Cyprus properties such as
apartments]. The programme suggested that buying [properties such as
apartments] in northern Cyprus was ‘investing in the most risky property in the
world’, and that owners could be threatened with legal action, amongst other
things.
|
However, prominent TRNC [Northern Cyprus] journalist Tom Roche had the
following to say about the programme’s content: ‘The Greek Cypriot courts have
no jurisdiction over property disputes of any kind in north Cyprus and the
Greek Cypriot claim that their membership of the EU will somehow allow them to
pursue these matters in the European Court, is completely specious’.
‘Most intelligent viewers viewers [potential buyers of Northern Cyprus
properties such as apartments] will know that it is possible to switch on a
television in Britain on almost any evening to see a horror story about a
couple whose ‘dream home [apartments etc] in the sun turned into a nightmare’,
whether it be through shoddy building, unsafe contracts, illegal titles or
whatever. To this extent, buying property [such apartments etc in central
Kyrenia] in north Cyprus is no different to buying property in any foreign
country. Purchasers are naturally advised to seek the assistance of a good
lawyer [in Northern Cyprus] and a recommended [Northern Cyprus] agent.’
With all the bad press [about Northern Cyprus properties], it’s no wonder that
the [northern Cyprus property] market has slowed. But the TRNC [Northern
Cyprus] property market is notoriously thick-skinned, and is expected to bounce
back with renewed vitality when the weather cools. After all, there’s only one
way to prove them all wrong!
Purchasers are naturally advised to seek the assistance of a good lawyer [in
Nothern Cyprus] and a recommended [Northern Cyprus] agent.
